Dissertation Module

The MBA Dissertation module is a core module in the Master of Business Administration programme at the University of Lancashire. This module provides students with the opportunity to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice within the field of management.

Throughout the module, students will learn about research methods and approaches, as well as how to develop a research proposal and conduct a literature review. In terms of coursework, students will be required to complete a brief on research methods (2,000 words), a project (12,000 words) and a professional development report (1,000 words).

The dissertation topic can be chosen by the student in any management specialism they prefer, such as finance, marketing, human resources, or operations. This provides an opportunity for students to explore a particular area of interest and gain expertise in that field.

Upon successful completion of the Dissertation Module, learners will be able to:

  • Conduct independent and systematic research on a specialised business or management topic using appropriate academic and professional research methodologies.
  • Critically evaluate relevant literature, theories, and contemporary business practices to support informed analysis and decision-making.
  • Identify, analyse, and address complex organisational or management problems through evidence-based research and strategic recommendations.
  • Apply qualitative and/or quantitative research methods effectively for data collection, interpretation, and analysis.
  • Demonstrate advanced critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills within business and management contexts.
  • Integrate academic theory with practical business applications to produce meaningful and professionally relevant outcomes.
  • Produce a well-structured, academically rigorous, and professionally presented dissertation that demonstrates originality, ethical awareness, and academic integrity.
  • Communicate research findings, conclusions, and recommendations effectively through professional academic writing and presentation techniques.
  • Demonstrate independent learning, time management, and project management skills necessary for postgraduate-level study and professional environments.
  • Reflect critically on research processes, personal development, and professional practice to support continuous learning and career progression.
